Sustange – Sustainability & Change in Visual Merchandising

 

On 28 July 2011, Barthelmess invited clients, industry experts, media and employees to "Barthelmess Vision". The theme for this event was "Sustange". This umbrella term, comprising sustainability and change, unites two trends that may seem a bit contradictory at first glance – in visual merchandising and in the retail trade generally. Brochure

The retail market, and particularly visual merchandising in retail, has always been committed to change, to continuous transformation, and will only be able to shape its future successfully through change. In the last few years, cycles have grown even shorter in visual merchandising and shopfitting, but also in the product lines and collections being advertised. Six to twelve different collections need to be showcased throughout the year. At the same time, the issue of sustainability has been taking on ever greater importance. Consumers are increasingly holding their preferred retailers to account. Organic, fair trade, carbon footprint, LOHAS and CSR are the words on everyone's lips.      

At "Barthelmess Vision", both our internal specialists and experts from the wider industry and the Barthelmess network gave talks on these topics. Silke Claus, CEO of Bayern Design, gave an in-depth overview on the subject of ecodesign and its implications for the business world. Annalisa Olivieri, Anna de Marzo and Adriano Vitali, students at the Swiss College of Visual Merchandising [Centre d'enseignement professionnel de Vevey (CEPV)], presented their visions for the department store of the Future. Karl-Peter Hasenkamp of the climate initiative Prima Klima outlined the rationale and background behind his work, and revealed how the Barthelmess Group's activities will become carbon-neutral for the first time during this fiscal year. Approximately 70 participants used the breaks and an evening group session for an intensive exchange of ideas on the featured topics.      

Barthelmess CEO Wolfgang Bastert: "Visions, strategies and actions are sustainable when understood in terms of their long-term implications and therefore in terms of their overall complexity, and when they conserve our resources as carefully as possible in their implementation. So for us the question presented itself: Are these two major trends in visual merchandising and in retail generally contradictory? Or can constant change – whether that be in a shop window every four to six weeks, or in the general retail environment every three to five years – be combined with a sustainable management culture? We believe that the two can come together outstandingly well, provided the corresponding intelligent solutions exist."   Sustange is an inspiring and motivational new concept for Barthelmess, on the basis of which the company intends to develop workable visions for the future and concrete solutions for the retail environment of today and tomorrow.
